| Your head has a lot less blood vessels in it – so it doesn’t really matter too much about the UV light getting to your head. If there is little blood – you will find it hard to tan. People find similar problems with their shins and shoulders.
Add to this that sunbeds are manufactured under the assumption that you have hair! Some sunbeds now have shoulder tanners that could help you.
To solve this problem, try adding an accelerator or amplifier to your head when you tan – it may make a difference. Be warned though, that your head maybe sensitive, so try on a small area the first time. Some companies, like Fiji Tan, have a specific lotion for legs and shins; you could also try that on your head. These products do tend to have some form of bronzer in, but like I mentioned, you will find it difficult to tan due to decreased blood supply. Again, if you try this – on a small area first!
If you are peeling, you have two problems: one – over exposure (you are getting burned) and two – lack of moisturisation. I would suggest that you moisturise your skin (all of it) once a day. This may stop you going red too, as sunburn happens when your skin is very dry.
I am a bit concerned that you go red, as this is not a good sign (regardless of what people tell you). Try going a bit slower, and if you want immediate results, use a bronzer in the first instance! Otherwise use something like Brown Envy. This will also help keep your skin moisturised and in good condition.
Once you have got to the stage where you don’t go any browner, use something like Valle de Sol or Smoke to break through the plateau. There will come a time where you just can’t go any darker, but there are more advanced lotions to get you through the early stages.
Make sure that you wear sun block when out in the sun if using tanning beds, again it avoids over exposure and allows your skin to repair and develop a much better tan. The sun block also moisturises your skin.
